Avenged Sevenfold is an American rock band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1999. The band consists of vocalist M. Shadows, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance and bassist Johnny Christ.
Avenged Sevenfold emerged with a metalcore sound on their debut Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, which included primarily screaming vocals. The band changed their style on their third album and first major label release, City of Evil, which features more melodic vocals and power ballads. The band continued to explore new sounds with their self titled release and enjoyed continued mainstream success before their drummer, James Sullivan, "The Rev" died of heart disease and combining effects of a few chemicals in his body in 2009. Despite his death, the band continued on with help of then Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and released their fifth album Nightmare in 2010 which debuted on the top spot of the Billboard 200-the first for the band.
To date, Avenged Sevenfold has released five studio albums, one live album/compilation/DVD, and fifteen singles. The band themselves have received much credit for their worldwide mainstream success and were most notably proclaimed as one of the leaders and key bands in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal and were featured as second place on Ultimate Guitar's Top Ten Bands of the Decade.

M. Shadows (born Matthew Sanders on July 31, 1981), is the vocalist/lead singer for the American hard rock/metalcore band Avenged Sevenfold. He's also one of the band's founder. He is from Huntington Beach, California but presently lives elsewhere in Orange County. He got his stage name because of his 'darker' character, but then he didn't want the name 'Matt' be part of his name so he decided to name himself M. Shadows. He's married to Valary DiBenedetto who is the twin of Synyster Gates' wife, Michelle DiBenedetto. He can play drums, guitar, and piano.
Synyster Gates
Synyster Gates (Brian Elwin Haner, Jr.) was born on July 7, 1981 in Huntington Beach, CA. He's the lead guitarist of Avenged Sevenfold. He's married to Michelle DiBenedetto.
Synyster Gates joined Avenged Sevenfold in 2001, after they released the album Sounding The Seventh Trumpet. Synyster was a member of Pinkly Smooth. Synyster also issued a clothing line called Syn Gates Clothing.
Zacky Vengeance
Zacky Vengeance (Zachary James Baker) was born on December 11, 1981. Vengeance is one of the founding members of Avenged Sevenfold. He formed Avenged Sevenfold in 1999 with M. Shadows, and initially only the band's guitarist, but then Synyster Gates joined the band in 2001. He is the only guitarist who appears on the original release of the first album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, although later re-released with one song featuring Gates.
Johnny Christ
Johnny Christ (Jonathan Lewis Seward) was born on November 18, 1984. Johnny Christ was the fourth bassist to join Avenged Sevenfold in 2002, replacing former members Matt Wendt, Dameon Ash, and Justin Sane. Other facts: the first gig that he attended was Metallica, Johnny has a tattoo of a skull with a cowboy hat on his neck. His parents are divorced which is why he went with 2 names. He smokes and drinks a lot.
The Rev
The Rev (James Owen Sullivan) was born on Feburary 12, 1981 and died on December 28, 2009. He lived in Orange County, CA. Jimmy Sullivan began his career at his high school. He studied at Catholic schools with M. Shadows for basic education, but he was kicked out in second grade. He was a trouble maker. No child was allowed to hang out with him. That is, until Matt Sanders and Brian Haner, Jr. found him. They became friends and a few years later, Jimmy and Brian started a band called Pinkly Smooth. Matt also started a band called Avenged Sevenfold, asked Jimmy to join, and the rest is history ...
